Getting Around New York:
On Foot:
NYC is considered a ?walking city? because it is level, and most of the city is laid out in a grid. Within Manhattan, 20 uptown/downtown blocks and 10 cross-town blocks equal about one mile. The city?s grid system of uptown/downtown streets intersecting with cross-town streets makes it hard to get lost.
NYC Street Finder:
This handy chart helps people find addresses easily. It is available at nycvisit.com. To use the chart, you drop the last figure of the address you?re seeking, divide by two, and add or subtract the number listed on the chart. The resulting number is the nearest numbered cross street to your destination.
